Molokai Rural Development Project:

Computer-Based Training

With computer technology constantly evolving, the need for a program that can provide the essential tools, resources, and training to Molokai students and professionals as well as businesses and community-based programs has peaked. If Molokai is to prepare its residents to meet workforce trends, a high degree of computer literacy is required.

To ensure capacity to provide computer-based instruction, distance learning and training for Molokai’s workforce, RDP sponsored this project. The MCC-Molokai Education Centers’ instructional lab housed obsolete seven-year old operating systems that were inadequate in meeting the technological needs of students. In order to teach ongoing courses at the MCC-MEC as well as meet current technology trends for future courses, the computer lab required upgrade. Updated computer systems can now accommodate evolving word processing, business computing, and web based (design and programming) software. Successful completion of computer and internet based courses will assist participants with web-based careers and technological career paths.

RDP will also upgrade the small student resource center lab at the MCC - Molokai Education Center as well as assist in the establishment of a computer lab at MCC – Molokai Farm which has recently erected a new classroom for on-site agricultural instruction.

The target groups to be served through training include youth and young adults; those seeking educational advancement and/or a new career; people seeking job retention and advancement; and employers (State, County and private). The MCC Molokai Education Center will develop and implement computer based training to Molokai’s workforce, including state and county employees and local businesses. RDP and the Molokai Education Center will collaborate with the island’s state and county offices and local employers to identify training needs and assist in recruitment. The Moloka`i Education Center will also schedule use of the new computer lab for other training provided by the Department of Education, Kamehameha Schools, state and county agencies, others.
